Short answer: it is too late for the big TV Christmas campaigns, and it is not too late for most of the work a freelancer or small studio actually wants. You just need to pitch the right brands, the right size of job, and fast.
What's already decided by October
The big Christmas adverts are made months in advance. In 2025, M&S released the first of its Christmas ads on 30 October and John Lewis launched its advert on 4 November. Campaigns that land then were planned and shot long before. If you are hoping to pitch a national retailer's hero Christmas film in October, that window closed in the spring and summer.
What's still open
Small and growing brands
Independent brands often plan Christmas much later than the big retailers, and many founders are still working out their gifting content in October. They need product shots for gift guides, short social videos and launch emails, usually quickly and on a small budget.
Black Friday and Cyber Monday
Black Friday is on Friday 27 November 2026 and Cyber Monday on 30 November. Brands running offers need ad creative, email graphics and copy that wear out within days. That is quick, well-defined work, and October is the right time to offer it.
More ads, fast
Brands that are already running lots of ads will need fresh versions through November and December, because ads wear out. Check the free Meta Ad Library: if a brand's live ads jump, offer a batch of festive variations of what is already working. More on that in reading ad activity.
Hospitality and local businesses
Restaurants, bars and venues need Christmas party and menu content, and local shops need window, in-store and social content for the run-up. They are close to you, often decide fast, and are easy to visit.
January
Pitching now for January is underrated. Sales, "new year" campaigns and Valentine's Day all need content made in December, and most creatives aren't thinking about them yet. Mother's Day in the UK falls on Sunday 7 March 2027, earlier than many people expect, and gifting brands plan for it soon after Christmas.
How to pitch in October
- Offer a fixed, small package with a clear price and turnaround: "a gift guide shoot of 12 products, delivered within a week", or "six short vertical ads for Black Friday".
- Lead with the deadline, not your portfolio. At this time of year speed and reliability matter more than range. Say when you can deliver.
- Show one example that fits, not your whole portfolio.
- Make it easy to say yes: one decision, one price, a start date.
Plan next year's Christmas now
The bigger Christmas jobs are won in spring and summer, when brands are still choosing who to work with. Put a reminder in your calendar for May to start pitching festive ideas to the brands you want, and see the best time to pitch a brand for the signals to watch in between.
BrandBnk watches UK brands for the signals that come before these campaigns, including jumps in ad activity, launches and new marketing hires, so you can see who is gearing up. The approach above works without it too: pick the brands, offer something small and specific, and send it this week.
